Debating class

Debating class

For weeks since the debate started we've been learning about debating techniques and we also did debate against other people, either being for or against the topic given. We were put in randomized groups of three and had to debate against another team.

Foot Print Analysis

 Foot Print Analysis

On Tuesday in Forensic Science we learnt about footprints and recently we learn about handprints/fingerprints. For fingerprints, we learnt about the different patterns like whorls, loops and arches. I recently discovered that the majority of my fingerprints are looped and only a few are whorls.

What is a footprint? A footprint is a mark that is left on top of a surface by people and is usually used to investigate and find clues in forensics science, they can tell the different prints made by the shoe. Footprints can be left by both animals and humans, they could also be barefoot or with shoes. Footprints/shoeprints can also be used to figure out both weight and height.

Social Studies Gladiator Poster

 Social Studies Gladiator Poster

Last week we made an advertisement poster about ancient gladiators from the past. We learned about Roman numerals, Roman Sports and where gladiators would be forced to fight.

My Holiday

 My Holiday :)

I am going to write about my time during my holiday. Physically, I've gone out to the mall with my friends for 4 hours, walking around outside and inside the mall, we even got to buy food together, rings, and more. I also went to one of my friend's birthdays, went to the city too, and a lot more but I mostly spent my time at home playing games, watching movies, and making also making Omurice with my brother.

I also spent some time improving my drawing skills and also my writing skills, and also reading skills. I tried studying mathematics since the end-of-year tests were coming up this term but I kinda am forgetful so I kinda don't remember some things that I studied. I also played a lot of games with my friends online and we also tried to make Dalgona candy with one of them but we miserably failed.

Lastly, we went to go buy some snacks from Japan Mart & Big T to buy some snacks since we were planning to watch a movie at night. We also bought an instant Bubble Tea maker which tasted decent but had a strange aftertaste that made my head dizzy and hurt. Emotionally, my holidays weren't that boring but it wasn't that exciting either and I also did cry a lot because of watching Animes & Kdramas. I also read a lot of mangas and manhwas online but some of them aren't completed.

Technology Lawyer Paragraph

 Technology Lawyer Paragraph

Technology has gradually changed over the years like how humans have also changed throughout the years. The reason why technology now is so much more advanced is that they’ve made it safer, efficient, faster etc). Like how planes in the past were commonly hijacked but now planes have been given improvements and new technology. Also how cars in the past used to produce a lot of smoke but now technology has been minimalizing how much toxic air cars produce to help the environment. There is more shown proof that technology has changed like how humans have changed, but has technology changed for the better or for the worse? For humans, life has been easier but for our environment, it could be different.

ESOL REFLECTION

ESOL REFLECTION

The best lesson for me this term was when we did the hearing test and got free time at the end of the lesson. I enjoyed doing the hearing test because it was challenging and that you needed to carefully listen to be able to get a high score. I also enjoyed it when at the end of the lesson the teacher let us use our phones and film videos. Something I enjoyed very much throughout the year was when we had to do a slide presentation about something that was related to a movie called Penguin, A movie that thought about the process of grief. It was my favourite lesson of ESOL when we all had to present our projects and read them out loud,  although it was a bit embarrassing, we all managed to overcome our fears and present to the whole class.

I was very proud of the presentation I did since I spent a really long time practising, making the slide look interesting, and also researching about Thailand. Something that I would do differently next term is to fix my volume when I speak and carefully listen to the teacher when they are explaining something to us that is important for our learning.

I hope next term we can do more physical activities in groups, like going on a trip somewhere, debates between each other, kahoots, quizlets, etc). I like having ESOL especially when I am together with my friends.

DLO SOCIAL STUDIES

 DLO SOCIAL STUDIES

What was the New Zealand Land March? A land march that was lead by Whina Cooper including 50000 Marchers. It was a petition that was signed by more than 60,000 people.

Understand the events that caused the protest? The protest took place because Maori were suffering cultural loss, land alienations. Basically in the past Maori were treated unfairly compared to other people in New Zealand. The Land March was successfully led with the support of many and by a very special person called Dame Whina Cooper who led the Land March proudly.

After the New Zealand land march, the Maori finally had enough courage to stand up for themselves and everyone started being aware of the land loss and everything else. They also started letting Maori speak their own languages, share their culture with other people, making Maori language week an official event around New Zealand, and also making Maori one of the official languages in New Zealand.

For these three weeks, I've learnt more about Maori culture and about its historical past.

P.E

For the past week, we have been playing badminton in P.E. Today I am going to tell you how to score a game of badminton.

You can play badminton in singles or pairs. There are smaller lines over to the and wider/deeper lines for a double match.

If you hit the shuttlecock over to the opposition side, and they don't hit it, but it lands within the court lines, you score a point.

if a server is unsuccessful in hitting the shuttlecock over the net, or the serve doesn't go diagonal, it's a point to the other team and they get the next serve.

if you hit the shuttlecock out of the lines/court, it's a point to the other team.

if you don't hit the shuttlecock, or don't hit it back over the net, and it falls to the ground on your side of the court, its a point to the other team.

The first team to reach 21 points wins the game. There are usually 3 games played. so you might win 3-0, 2-1 or 2-0.

if the teams are both on 20 points in a game, the winner must get two points ahead to win, eg. 22-20.

Social Studies MAP

 Social Studies DLO

Today in Social studies we made a map of the Hikoi from the far North Parliament. We have been learning about the Land march that Whina Cooper lead. Making the map was very successful,  at first it was challenging figuring out how to add the locations but it got easier. What would I do next time? I wouldn't do anything differently if I had to do it again.

Reflection - The trolley

 Reflection - The trolley

Today we read a story called "The trolley"  and answered questions about it. The story is about a mom who was planning to get a present for her two children but didn't have enough money to get them an expensive present instead she made a home-made trolley made out of used things from her house as a present, she spent a sleepless night just to finish the present but she was anxious her children would be embarrassed and unhappy with the present since others had gotten expensive presents.

Questions:

1) What was the mother’s name? The mother’s name was TaniaWhat were the names of her kids? Her children’s names are Miria and Hoani.

2)Why did she make them a trolley? She made her children a trolley since she wanted to give them a present because she loves them.

3) What was her anxiety about? Why was she so anxious about that? She was anxious about giving the gift because other children were getting expensive gifts and her gift was homemade.

4) How did the children react to the gift? The children loved the gift although they didn’t say anything they quickly rode on it in their pyjamas.

5) What does this teach us? This topic teaches us that happiness can’t always be bought with money.

Arts Kete

 Arts Kete

At the end of term 2, we were given a form of different options we could pick for our Arts kete like stone carving, watercolour painting, cross-stitch and more. We had to pick 2 different options in case if we couldn't get into our first options, the two options I picked were watercolour and storyboard art. Our Arts Kete is only on Wednesdays, yesterday for watercolour we made our Kahui birds which were either Mohua, Riroriro, and Tieke.

We also introduced ourselves to our class to get to know each other a bit, after we chose designs and songs as recommendations of what we would like to learn/listen to next class.

Health: Discrimination and Racism

Health: Discrimination and Racism

In health, we were set a task that required us to go either in pairs or by ourselves. The topic we chose to write about is discrimination and racism around the world.  Firstly we had to choose our 6 big questions, The reason we picked these is that we think these questions related to our topic about discrimination and racism.

Discrimination And Racism

Why are discrimination and racism harmful?

Discrimination and racism are harmful because people that have different races are being made fun of for things that they have to do or what they look like because of their race, and it affects them and makes them extremely insecure and sometimes it makes them anxious about the point that they get headaches, increased heart rate, sweating, trembling and muscle tension.

What influences people to do it?

Back in the past, children were taught whatever their society and culture have learnt about such as beauty standards, skin colours, Appearances, what’s normal and abnormal, etc). Social media could also be the cause of racism, back in 2017 racism was normalized for a whole year with a president in America running a hate-filled platform that denigrated and demeaned anyone who was not a white male. Children under the influence of social media.

Who can’t and who can?

Personally, I don’t think that anyone should be racist against each other. Each race is different and has different quirks so I don’t think anyone can be racist to each other.

What needs to change?

How the rest of the world views different cultures and races. Standing up against discrimination by peaceful protests, donations for people who are being tormented.

What assumptions are made?

There are many assumptions made about each race like; Black people being criminals, and Asians being the reason for covid 19 just like how trump calls it the China virus.

What are the common beauty standards around the world?

Since the early 2000s, beauty standards have gradually changed. Now we need to have a flat stomach, “healthy” skin, Large breasts + butt, thigh gap etc).

A way to manage racism.

We should spread awareness. Employers can raise awareness by giving materials to educate employees about the culture of racism and the history of different races, in addition to having talks. The majority of people are oblivious of racial injustice and the unintentional comments they make towards their BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) coworkers.

I worked well with my partner because we both have experienced racism throughout our life especially when Covid-19 broke out and half of the world had blamed us for the breakout and because we were Asian. People had called us either "Chinese Eyes" or "Ching Chong".

 Human Rights Blog

Last week we started a poster about the 30 rules of Human rights while rephrasing it in our own words. We also had to go in pairs for this project, I teamed up with Alexis as my partner.

Next time, I would add a bit more information about Human Rights and how it was changed from Natural Laws to Human rights.

Abomination book Questions

Gloriavale Questions:

  • What are the traditional roles of men, women and children that are shown in this community? one traditional role for men would be construction.

  • At what age are members of Gloriavale expected to begin work? About 2 to 3 years old, basically when the child is able to walk.

  • What role does religion play in the lives of Gloriavale members? It is rumoured that if they leave Gloriavale in the afterlife they will go to hell.

  • Do you think the people living in Gloriavale are happy? Why or why not? In my opinion, I think most of them are neutral living in Gloriavale, the reason for this is because that was the way they were thought to live because of their strict religion. I do think some feel different but are afraid to speak about it to others.

  • Do you think the people in Gloriavale experience Human Rights? People in Gloriavale do not get to experience Human Rights especially women. They are told what their roles are.

  • Would you be happy to live in a community like Gloriavale. Why or why not? I would be unhappy to live in Gloriavale, having your own freedom taken away just when your life had started would be the worst.

The Springbok Tour Protests

 The Springbok Tour Protests

1) What is another world for apartheid? Another word for apartheid would be apartness/separation by ethnicity/skin colour.

2) Why did the protestors need helmets? They needed to wear them because the police had used long batons to aggressively hit them.

3) Why do you think being called "Honorary whites" upset the Maoi All blacks? Before the New Zealand government had cancelled two All blacks tours to South Africa due to Racist rules but then was mocked as "honorary whites" when they first arrived.

4) Why was the Hamilton rugby game cancelled? It was cancelled because hundreds of anti-tour protesters had infiltrated the field with chants.

5) do you think this protest was successful? why? why not? I think the anti-tour protesters were successful in the end, the apartheid was sent to jail and was stopped by Nelson Mandela when he became president of South Africa.

10 Facts about Springbok Tour protest.

1) For 56 days from July to August, New Zealanders were divided and were forced to go against each other.

2) More than 150,000 people were involved in the event.

3) The event occurred in 1981.

Chemistry Blog

 CHEMISTRY BLOG

For the last 4 weeks, we have been doing different experiments involving contraction, expansion, conduction, convection in liquid, and convection in gas. All these experiments all related to what we have learned about.

Contraction: Something that combines with another substance reduces in size/gets smaller, this relates to our experiment called imploding can. The reason for this is because when we heated up the water inside the can using the bunsen burner and then quickly tipped the can upside down into cold water, the can immediately imploded because the cold and hot water contracted together which made the can implode.

Expansion: This would be the opposite of contraction, expansion is when instead of decreasing the size increases.

Conduction:  A process in which either heat or electricity travels through a substance with a difference in temperature.

Convection in liquid: The speed of heat travelling through opposite substances. Using hot water (not boiling) in a beaker we slowly added in the permanganate crystal thoroughly expanding the colour fastly through the water.

Convection in gas: When particles with a lot of heat energy replace less heated particles, the hot particles/areas rise into the cold areas because it is a lot denser than the cold areas.

Persuasive Writing

 Essay brainstorming: week 10

Persuasive Writing = Animal Testing should be illegal/banned.

Introduction:
Animal testing should definitely be illegal on every continent on earth, these days more experiments/tests are being used on Animals such as Cosmetics, drugs, skin corrosions, etc). My argument is that harmless animals are being tortured and used just for the sake of modern humanity! The consequence of this tragedy could be linked to some of the extinction/endangerment of certain animals. Would you agree with my statement?

As of now, Rabbits are near threatened BECAUSE OF ANIMAL TESTING. My evidence for this is that Rabbits are being used for cosmetic testing such as draize eyes, skin irritancy tests that are very brutal and painful. When rabbits are being experimented on they are locked into full-body restraints, after a painful experiment they are normally killed in case of cross-contamination. More than 170,000 rabbits are killed each year in the laboratory because of animal testing. Even Guinea Pigs, Rats, and Hamsters are also being used for cosmetic testing and soon might also follow the same footsteps as Rabbits.

Could animal testing lead to extinction?

Each year in the U.S.A, more than 100 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories. This all elaborates on why animal testing should be illegal and why it should be a crime, global estimation would be more than 115 million, with only 3% of animal survival. It is very much possible that animal testing can lead to the extinction of common animals such as Monkeys, Chimpanzees, Dogs, Cats etc).

How many percentages of Animal Testing have failed?

Back in 2004, The FDA said that about 92% of drugs that pass through preclinical tests fail to permit to the market. After some research, recent analysis has proven that despite trying to improve the possibilities of animal testing, the failure rating has risen up to 96% over the years.

What could be a replacement for Animal Testing?

While animal testing has been legally banned, a replacement/alternative that would be harmless and exceptional to animal testing would be cultivated tests using human cells and tissues, with the help of advanced computer modelling technology/techniques and of coursehuman volunteers.

Conclusion:
Rather than supporting something that is atrocious, it is very much clear and understandable why animal testing should be illegal and why it should be considered a crime. To be reminded, animal testing could cause the endangerment of living creatures, the extinction and the development of new diseases and more unimaginable things! Everything that I have written so far is evidence of why it should be illegal. This might be humanity's only chance to redeem itself for the years of destruction we have caused such as the extinction of innocent animals, the pollution of earth’s natural resources, the overpopulation and a lot more.

     ESOL Blog

One of my current favorite movies/TV series is called Attack On Titan also known in Japanese as “進撃の巨人” ( Shingeki No Kyojin ). Attack On Titan is one of the most complex and interesting shows I’ve ever watched. The show includes one of the biggest character developments, plot twists, beautiful soundtracks, betrayals, heartbreaking moments, and a lot more! The show is also very medieval and also is really straightforward. You never know what to expect on every episode/season, Each season has a unique story that connects to one another. The story starts off with our two main characters, Eren and Mikasa, Eren had awoken from a long dream that was later revealed that the dream was actually the future of Paradise (The two main character's home). Then comes Armin our third main character of the show, these three were always on each other's side, the three of them all grew up together. Throughout the first season, the three of them were training as soldiers to defeat the titans and bring back wall Maria. The second season was about betrayal, you never know who your enemy might be... The third season was about the history of the world, what the titans were, how the world came to be, about Eren's past and the future of everyone. The fourth season was about war, from the start everybody was bound to die and that once everything is destroyed a new generation will come forth.

    Cup Challenge Attempt: 1#

     Cup Challenge Attempt: 1#

Last week on Wednesday we had to do a challenge using cups, string, and rubber bands. The Interpersonal skills we used last week were Negotiation, Manaakitanga, and active listening. My group had trouble working together, half of us were talking and half of us were doing the challenge. In the end, our whole team gave up and wasn't able to accomplish anything. If I could do this activity again I would've improvised better and encouraged our team to work together and use a different method. For me, the level I worked on Helisons behaviour model while doing the challenge would be half of level 1 and level 2.

You need to be working in groups of 4 or 5 people. Please try to work with people who are different from the last task together. Each group gets 1 elastic band and some string, and 5 plastic cupsThe challenge is to attach the string to the elastic band, and each group member pulls on the string to move each cup from one table to another. Challenge each other group to do it as fast as possible.

    Biography: Jacinda Ardern

     Biography: Jacinda Ardern

This week for English and Social Studies we had to make a biography of a specific person that could either be known as a hero or a villain. I chose to make a biography of Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's current prime minister, the reason why I had chosen her is that I consider as one of the bravest and most achievable people in the universe. In the future, I would like to become a confident and independent woman just like Jacinda Ardern.

    Culture Clash

    Culture Clash

For the past term, we've been learning about tones, colors, techniques, compositions, etc). For the last weeks of term 1, we were working on a painting combination of manga and Pasifika. I will be showing different photos of my progress before the painting.  For the first photo, we had to draw 2 characters and show the progress of how you make hair, head, etc). The second photo is a painting that I made using tricks for painting, glaze, retarder, etc). The third photo is a mix of all the things we did throughout the term.

    Interpersonal Skills drawing in pairs.

The Ip skills that I used today were verbal communication, warm fuzzies, and active listening. It was challenging to explain very difficult and complex photos, but somehow at the end, it looked a bit similar?
I managed to somehow get the proportions right.  How did it help with the success/lack of success, of the activity? This activity helped me understand more about my partner, Alexis. It helped us understand each other's differences. If I were to do this again, I would explain the picture more in detail, the proportions, shapes, sizes, etc).

    Dirty Water Experiment.

     Dirty Water

Aim: Separate the dirt from the clean water at the end of the experiment.

    Method:

    1. Use a 250mL beaker to get 200mL of water.

    2. Add 2 spoonfuls of dirt.

    3. Add 10ml of oil.

    4. Add a spoonful of pebbles.

    5. stir it for 2mins.

    6. label a piece of paper with your names and place it under your beaker.

    7. take a photo of your experiment.

    Experiment now:

We diluted the dirty water by stirring it together then replacing the original 100ml of dirty water twice then stirring it once again. The way we set the filter is by starting off with the base then the retort stands then putting 2 funnels, one with cloth and one with filter paper. We made this experiment by using solute substances such as dirt and pebbles then adding them into a solvent substance called water with oil. thus the solution we created was called dirty water. Then after mixing for a while some of the solute substance had dissolved into the solvent.

In our first experiment, half of our solvent substance was spilled since one of our classmates decided to run into me and spilled half of it which made our experiment concentrated. Then we added more water which made our dirty water more diluted, something I realized from this is that a change of dilution affects the outcome of the experiment.

After a brief time, we had to filter our dirty water back to clean and clear water. We used two different funnels and two different papers, the top was just a normal daily item that you buy from stores, on the bottom funnel we used a real filter paper. The top funnel was for collecting the big pieces of solute and the bottom was to make the water clear and collect the minute piece of solute and make the solvent/liquid back to how it was before we added any solute. At the end of our experiment, we managed to make it a bit cleaner than before but there was still a tint of yellow.

    After the filtering process:

    Digestive System Blog Post

     Digestive System Blog Post

The Oesophagus is basically the muscular tube commonly known as the throat. Connecting the mouth to the stomach, When swallowing different types of food, the walls of the oesophagus contracts/tighten together which transport the food to the stomach. The oesophagus is about 25cm in length. The stomach then mashes/consume the food down then turns them into miniature/smaller individual pieces that came from the oesophagus, using the acid in our stomach, the stomach also requires help from a lot of our stronger muscles on the stomach's walls. To prevent/protect our stomach from burning (Burning from the acid).

The stomach has three main functions, storage for food that was passed from the oesophagus. The stomach holds the food for two hours or longer, Then next all the food inside would start to break down and would start to mix together. The small intestines also break the food down or digest the food, it also absorbs all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals etc). The large intestine takes a straight path compared to the small intestines, it goes through your belly also known as the abdomen.

The large intestine absorbs the waters and salts from the material that hasn't been digested, the large intestine also gets rid of any waste products that have been left. The liver converts substances. ex) elemental parts, water, iron, aluminium, air, salt etc). The liver does this by receiving blood with nutrients from the digestive organs.

    Hunt for the Wilderpeople

    Hunt For The Wilderpeople Essay

“The Hunt for the Wilderpeople” is a New Zealand film produced/directed in 2016 by Taika Waititi. An adventurous comedy-drama film. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an adaptation/ was based on the book Wild pork and Watercress, written by Barry Crump.  Jullian Dennison who played Ricky Baker and Sam Neill played “Uncle” Hector. A father figure and a foster son who had become “criminals” and was chased by a manhunt after fleeing to the Bush (New Zealand Bush). The film was released across New Zealand on the 31st of March 2016.

The movie includes a throughout plot/storyline, character developments, and well-written relationships. Ricky Baker (Protagonist) was a juvenile delinquent who was abandoned by his own biological mother and was taken by the child welfare agency, officer Paula and police officer, Andy. He then was brought to a farm with foster aunt Bella and her husband.

Throughout the start of the story, Ricky and Bella then developed an unbreakable mother-son bond. Ricky felt accepted and thought of aunt Bella as a mother that he never had, but unfortunately, Bella had suddenly died, leaving Hector and Ricky devastated. Throughout the story Ricky and Hector adventures to the bush building a relationship similar to Bella’s and Ricky’s. You could say Hector is a very interesting and unusual character to learn about, a lot of times he is very unpredictable, mysterious, and sometimes understanding.

At first, Ricky and Hector had a very distant relationship, when Hector was first introduced to the story he was very mysterious and he looked very intimidating to Ricky. Around the start of the Hector never really showed any affection towards anyone or anything but he did deeply love and care for Bella but showed affection at the very end of Bella’s life. After Bella’s quick death, Ricky and Hector’s relationship didn’t change or develop for a minimum of time but they developed an unusual but understanding relationship/bond with each other.

One of the most memorable moments in the show was when Ricky was able to overcome his fear, saying something similar to “you never trade family for anything!”. Leaving Paula and Andy speechless, this scene clearly shows that Ricky’s character had changed throughout the show.
