Summer Learning Journey: Hana Koko 2020 - 2021

Summer Learning Journey: Hana Koko 2020 - 2021

Hello! I'm back, sorry I haven't been active for a few days but here is an original Santa Claus outfit inspired by my home country, the Philippines!

For this activity we had to make our own Santa Claus costume/outfit using google drawings based on where we live. I used to live in the Philippines 4 years ago and I really miss my friends and family from the Philippines so I've dedicated this costume for my love to the Philippines!

I was inspired by:

This outfit is inspired by my home country, Philippines! The colors, sun and stars are inspired my the Philippines flag.

The reason why I had included these special details from the flag since I wanted to show my appreciation and love for Philippines and for my family there!

Even though we had to make it digitally using google drawings I also drew it by hand. Fun fact it was actually the opposite, I recreated this Santa Claus costume digitally! This costume was originally made/drawn on paper.

I'll be showing both!

P.S I made my own costume using different kinds of shapes meshed together. I didn't use any existing images/pngs and I also did quite a bit changed the outfit on the digital one I made.

Summer Learning Journey: Summer Haiku

Summer Learning Journey: Summer Haiku

Today I had made a Haiku about the night in summer. What is Haiku? you may ask, Haiku is a short type of poetry that is originally from Japan! traditional Haiku incorporates a three phrase that contains a kireji (cutting word), 17 in a total of words. in a 5, 7, 5 syllable pattern including a kigo (A seasonal reference).

Here is my Haiku about the night in summer ↓

In my opinion, making Haikus are very explicit and tend to be challenging sometimes can be stressful, you have to think carefully choosing your words especially when there is a limit on how much you could use. but for me, a person who is very interested in the culture of Japan, I really enjoy making haikus of my own.

Summer Learning Journey: Fishy False Teeth

Summer Learning Journey: Fishy False Teeth

For this activity: we had to watch a video called teeth, two elderly men were fishing and then one had lost their dentures while the other laughed, he thought of pranking the person who had lost their dentures thinking he had found them inside a fish's mouth.

Summer Learning Journey Week 1: Tanerore 2020 - 2021

 Summer Learning Journey Week 1: Tanerore 2020 - 2021

Week 1: Creare a Kowhaiwhai either digitally or draw your own on paper - rotate the koru to create your repeating pattern.

The Kowhaiwhai I created is based on the Ying Yang symbol, I choose to base it as the Ying Yan symbol since it both represents life and death, this symbol has a very interesting meaning behind it. Ying meaning life and yang being the opposite, death.

It was very fun making my own Kowhaiwahai and I had to do a bit of research around Kowhaiwhai and I did learn quite a lot of things about it.

Japan Explanation Writing

 Japan Explanation Writing

Have you ever dreamed of exploring all the countries in the world? Let me say it right here that I recommend you to visit Japan, Japan is one of the world's most popular and one of the most beautiful places on the earth! In this piece of writing, I’ll be talking about the first two neolithic histories of Japan.

Japan has an interesting history, culture (traditional culture) and trends. During the Jomon Period (14500 BCE to 300 BCE) when the country was inhabited by hunter-gatherers of Japan, beginning in 14000 BCE and ending in 1000 BCE in southwestern Japan and 500 CE in northeastern Japan. The name Jomon, meaning “cord-marked” or “patterned” comes from the style of pottery that was made during that time. The Jomon made stones and bone tools, and pottery beginning as early as 15,500 years ago.

The people that came to what would be known as today’s Japan (present Japan) first came at the end of the last glacial period or ice age. Following animal herds over land, bridges formed during the glacial period, after the climate had changed to warmer weather the land bridges had disappeared. The soon to be Jomon people had gotten stranded in an island. With the animal herds gone from their homelands, the Jomons had to utilized hunting and gathering skills to be able to survive.

After the Neolithic (Jomon) Period had ended, a new period had occurred known as the Yayoi Period/Yayoi Culture. The Yayoi Period, (300 BCE  to 250 CE) is a prehistoric culture/period of Japan, and subsequent to the past period, Jomon. The culture had first aroused on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu and had spread northeastward to Kanto Plain. They even had mastered bronze and iron casting! People had lived in village communities with thatched roofs, raised floor houses and more! But they also still continued the hunting and shell-gathering economy from the neolithic period.

EOTC Reflection

 EOTC Reflection

What is EOTC? EOTC basically stands for Education outside the classroom. EOTC isn't really known all over the world, it was technically for the 7/8/9s of Hornby High School exploring outside school for three days.

The three adventures that we got to experience were Adrenaline Forest, Jellie Park and the city. even though I had never gone to  Adrenaline Forest before, it was exciting/fun to adventure around Adrenaline with my friends!

1st-day EOTC:

For Adrenaline our kahui (Mohua) had gone to Adrelanine on Wednesday which was the first day of EOTC along with another kahui called Tieke which some of my friends were there. although we were our kahuis were separated when doing the actual activity on Adrenaline Forest. It was fun seeing my friends who we aren't generally with when we do outside activities.

We were taught the basic rules on how to be safe when climbing and hooking ourselves which had helped a lot, luckily all of us acted pretty respectful to them and listened carefully to their instructions. It was a fantastic experience and I'm very grateful to our teachers and the school for giving us an opportunity to experience something new.

2nd-day EOTC:

After that amazing experience on Adrenaline Forest, next up on our list was Jellie park! We were very lucky that day it was a warm, sunny day although I didn't really spend a lot of time in the pool I had a lot of fun! we went on different types of slides, we played games in the pool, we even had a competition with the boys (we kept splashing water on each other), we tried doing tricks while we were in the pool and so much more!

The teachers then brought some snacks for us, fish and chips (fries), they even brought cold popsicles for us (I don't really know what they were called) P.S the teacher had given me and my friends extra popsicles. Then we just stayed under the shade for a couple of minutes to relax.

3rd-day EOTC (last day):

On our last day of EOTC, we went to the city to visit a museum, Turanga(Library) and Margeret Mahy. it was my first time visiting the museum and Turanga. The museum had very interesting exhibits and very pretty things to look at although I wish we were allowed to take pictures. The library we had visited was huge! it had many floors with different types of books, they even had my favourite books to read! which were mangas(Japanese comics) and they had a lot of them! while we were at the museum and at the library we had this activity to do, it was like a search.

After that, we went to relax/take a break at Margeret Mahy, we were just relaxing at where the slides were, then we fed the birds which they flew away since one of our classmates scared them.

EOTC week was the best thing that had to happen this year especially when covid had brought us into lockdown for 1 to 2 months.

EOTC Week

 EOTC Week

This week is a very exciting week for us students to look forward to, this week we get to go on off-site activities Adrenaline Forest, Jellie Park and the city. All of them sound very exciting but the most I'm looking forward too/ is excited about is Adrenaline Forest!

I've only been to Adrenaline Forest once but I never actually got to participate since they were already fully booked. Everyone doing the obstacles looked both happy and frightened but overall everyone there had a smile on their faces.

Even though I'm scared of heights, I would really like to try it out! There are so much exciting and interesting obstacles to look forward too! It's even more fun to do it with your friends! I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow!
