The History Of New Zealand

The History Of New Zealand

Hi! My name is Zoe. Today I will be talking about The History of New Zealand and the history of how the Maori People found New Zealand.

So It all started with the Eastern Polynesians Sailing across South East Asia, They even made it to South America. They stumbled across an Island and agreed to settle there for a short time. The founders of New Zealand who first arrive Was a man called Kupe and his wife, They Arrived in New Zealand accidentally by chasing an octopus that was stealing their fish. They also Used Waka's(Canoes) to get to New Zealand.

James Cook was the first person to see the island and Named it New Zealand after the long white cloud but Kupe's wife was the person who named it Aotearoa which means in English New Zealand.

The Polynesians couldn't leave New Zealand due to Strong Winds that would push them back to the Land So they were technically stuck in New Zealand.

The Polynesians brought Crops to New Zealand but it was too cold to plant them. Eventually, they became Moriori. They first hunted fishes for food, then eventually hunted birds for food, one of the birds they hunted was called the Moa, The Moa was a flightless native bird but sadly are now Extinct due to causes. The Moa only laid around 1-3 eggs each year which made it hard for them to survive.

They eventually settled into places where they could farm their crops where it wasn't too cold nor hot and so they could protect themselves. People say that the Moriori and the Maori People are the same by DNA, Skeletal Evidence and by Language.

As you can see from these sentences that the history of New Zealand is very fascinating to learn about it and there are also some interesting facts about the Polynesians and other facts about New Zealand.

  1. Ka pai Zoe! I am very impressed with your summary of the arrival of Maori people in Aotearoa. You have shown that you understood this information well and have given great examples of why things happened how they did. I like the way that you wrote in paragraphs with different information in each paragraph.
You have just written a few small mistakes; they made it from South America, James Cook didn't name New Zealand; Abel Tasman did, it was just one group of Maori people that moved to the Chatham Islands and became Moriori.
I am glad that you find this learning fascinating, I do too!
I look forward to reading more of your blog posts about the history of Aotearoa.
